Dawn started her career as a graduate trainee with the John Lewis Partnership in 1988 and after 14 years in various managerial roles, left to join Northamptonshire County Council in 2002 as a performance manager, later becoming the assistant director for Public Protection for the county, overseeing the planning and performance in fire and rescue, trading standards, coroner’s office, registration services and some parts of community safety for the county.
She then moved from Public Protection Service directly into Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, where she was promoted through senior management to eventually becoming the Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO). In 2015 Dawn undertook a secondment into the Home Office as a professional sector adviser and then joined East Sussex as Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) in June 2016. Dawn was appointed Chief Fire Officer of East Sussex in 2017.
Dawn is an active member of the sector’s professional body, The National Fire Chief’s Council (NFCC) and is the deputy chair of its national Prevention Committee and leads in the UK for Water Safety and Drowning Prevention, both of which involve a lot of work with other agencies.
Apart from her career experience in the private and public sectors, Dawn has also undertaken work as a trustee for several charities, including the Royal Lifesaving Society, where she chaired the charity board. Currently she is the chair of the UK National Water Safety Forum and also chairs the East Sussex Strategic Partnership.
