GREG BACKS LOCAL APPRENTICES!
19.03.13 for immediate release: Local MP, Greg Barker, met local apprentices at Torr Scientific in Bexhill last Friday during National Apprenticeship Week to learn more about how the apprenticeship programme is working in our area.
Torr Scientific is a growing, local high tech manufacturing business that plans to expand its premises this year to meet growing demand for their innovative and specialised UHV, optical and x-ray products.
Managing Director, David Bates, took Greg on a tour of the company and introduced Greg to three apprentices. James Jones joined the company straight from Bexhill High School and is an apprentice production technician who is also completing a BTEC engineering course at Sussex Coast College, Victoria Champion is a graduate Apprentice Engineer who will use her knowledge as a sales engineer and Simon Mitchell is a Production Supervisor apprentice who is expanding his skills within the company.
Mel Thomas, Commercial Director at Torr Scientific also took the opportunity to tell Greg about the growing movement to promote this area as a centre of excellence for UHV Technology and Photonics. “There are many companies in this region producing high tech products for this industry which employ hundreds of local people and we think it will beneficial to the local economy to increase awareness of this cluster.”
Speaking at the company’s premises in Pebsham Greg said:
“Torr Scientific is a terrific local success story and a business which understands that the apprenticeship programme is ideal for developing home-grown talent. The Coalition Government has massively expanded our apprenticeship programmes.
“I was delighted to learn of the company’s plans for growth this year and their aim to increase their exports. Companies like Torr Scientific which continue to grow and export during these difficult economic times are exactly the type of business we want to see more of here in Bexhill with the many opportunities for local young people that they bring.
