The Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum wrote to the MP Dr Kieran Mullan 9 December about the proposed use of the Northeye site in Bexhill. This has been a troubled period over the past year for so many of our local residents directly impacted by the original proposal. Huw Merriman, councillors, community groups and Northeye residents and others worked tirelessly to challenge the proposal so we are pleased to see this is not to proceed.
It still leaves massive questions around the Government tackling the ongoing and increasing challenge of dealing with the arrival of asylum and illegal migrants onto our shores.
But we are so relieved for the Bexhill residents, families and businesses who have been so impacted by the potential threat. We now wait to see future proposals for the site once local partners and Rother District Council and East Sussex County Council and others assess the decision just made by the Home Office.
