Local MP Holds EU White Paper Events
Huw Merriman, MP for the Bexhill and Battle constituency, is inviting constituents to an update and a chance to express views on the latest plans for the UK’s departure from the European Union.
The MP will be holding a series of presentations in Heathfield, Bexhill and Battle towards the end of August where he will be explaining the detail of the Government’s White Paper. This document sets out the Government’s preferred terms of exiting from the EU and the future basis for UK and EU citizens to trade, work, visit, study and reside once the UK leaves the EU. Whilst these terms have to be negotiated and agreed with the EU, and voted for by MPs in Parliament, the MP wants to provide information so his constituents are kept informed.
Speaking at the launch of his presentations, Huw said “During the referendum, I saw my role as providing balanced information to voters in order to help them with their decision. This culminated in a 10 public meetings and talks to 25 local schools. Whilst the next set of votes will be for Parliament, I want to explain to constituents the terms of this 100 page White Paper and what will happen next. I then want to hear opinions. I am not seeking to impart my views, I just want to explain the content and give constituents the chance to ask questions and have their say. I hope, regardless of how people voted back in June 2016, as many people come along to get the latest information.”
The first EU presentation will be held at Battle Baptist on Tuesday 21 August from 7-9pm, followed by St John’s Church, London Road, Bexhill on Wednesday 22 August from 7-9pm and Heathfield Community Centre on Thursday 23 August from 7-9pm.
These events are a first-come, first-seated arrangement with no need to pre-book. Huw has also offered to explain more to local employers, organisations, schools and groups should they wish for a more tailored, or in-depth, session.
