HUW DISCOVERS POND LIFE AT PEVENSEY AND WESTHAM SCHOOL
22.06.2015 for immediate release: Pevensey and Westham MP, Huw Merriman found a toad and newts on his recent visit to Pevensey and Westham CE Primary School.
Huw who aims to visit a school in his constituency each week, joined Pevensey and Westham pupils for a session of pond-dipping last Friday afternoon. Huw was accompanied by local Wealden District Councillors Lin Clark, Dianne Dear and Kevin Balsdon.
Headteacher, Mr Thomas, and Chair of Governors, Mrs Julie Smith, showed Huw around the school and its grounds. Many pupils were outside enjoying ‘golden time’ extra play for good behaviour or in PE lessons on the school fields during the warm Friday afternoon. The school is currently developing its own allotment patch and plans to use the produce it grows to enhance school dinners which are made on the premises.
Huw joined pupils who were busy exploring nature in the school’s unique outdoor classroom. They showed him what they had found in their pond and were excited to have found a toad in a tree hollow which they were careful not to disturb.
Speaking in Pevensey, Huw said “I was delighted to visit Pevensey and Westham School last Friday afternoon and I’m grateful to Headteacher, Mr Thomas, and Chair of Governors, Mrs Smith, for giving up their time to show me around.
Pevensey and Westham Primary School clearly provides a wide range of activities and exciting lessons for the children which helps to make their learning fun and interesting. It was great to see the pupils so engaged in their lessons.”
