HUW JOINS SALEHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR END OF TERM QUESTION TIME
20.07.2015 for immediate release: Local MP, Huw Merriman, was given a Question Time style grilling by Year 6 pupils when he was welcomed to Salehurst CE Primary School in Robertsbridge by Headteacher Mr McGregor last Friday.
Huw, who aims to visit a school each week, found himself in the hot seat as the pupils of Year 6 questioned him on a range of topics about his role as their MP. The pupils had given a lot of thought to their questions which ranged from the government policy on helping asylum seekers through to housing development in Robertsbridge, arts in the school curriculum and road safety on the A21. They also asked him why he wanted to be an MP, what it’s like in the House of Commons and if he would like to be Prime Minister.
Year 6 Pupil Ambassadors, Charlotte and Stephen, also took Huw on a tour of the school during which he was invited to join Year 4 in their victory dance as one of their classmates had won the weekly award for being a good friend.
Speaking at the school Huw said “I was really impressed with the thoughtful questions that the year 6 pupils had prepared for me. They clearly care a lot about their local community and issues that affect people world-wide. They are excited to be moving on to secondary school in September where I am sure they will all do well.
I’m very grateful to Mr McGregor, the staff and pupils of Salehurst CE Primary School for making me so welcome at the end of their long summer term. I have invited the school to visit me in Parliament next year when I’m sure I can expect another grilling!”
