MP Invites Residents to Have Their Say on EU Referendum
100,000 residents in East Sussex are receiving an invitation through their letterbox from their local MP to have their say on the European Union referendum.
Huw Merriman, MP for Bexhill and Battle, has organised, and will be chairing, eight debates to be held across his constituency. At each debate, a speaker will argue the case for voters to remain in, and another will argue to case to leave, the EU. Huw will explain what a reformed EU would look like should the nation vote to remain and what the exit process will be should we leave. For those residents who cannot attend, Huw has provided links to the Parliamentary library which gives the arguments, facts and figures in a balanced way.
Said Huw ‘I have taken the view that it would be better for my constituents if I focussed my energies on giving voters an opportunity to hear, and debate, the competing arguments. I feel that this would be of more use than attempting to persuade constituents to vote one way or the other. Our future in the European Union will be down to the voters as a whole and not by politicians. I will be chairing the meetings in a neutral way, having kept my opinions to myself in order to do so. I hope that these meetings are an opportunity for voters to make their mind up after hearing the arguments.’
