MP EU DEBATES START IN BEXHILL AND BATTLE CONSTITUENCY
08.06.2016 For immediate release: Bexhill and Battle MP, Huw Merriman, launched the first of his eight EU Referendum debates across the constituency at Peasmarsh Memorial Hall last Saturday. Local residents filled the hall to capacity to hear both sides of the arguments from local speakers John Petley and Zai Koder, ask questions, and share their views.
The debates, being held over the next fortnight in Bexhill, Battle, Heathfield, Herstmonceux, Peasmarsh, Pevensey, Sedlescombe and Ticehurst will feature speakers from ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ who will be attempting to persuade the audience to follow their lead. The format provides an opportunity for the audience to have their say, as well as an introduction from Mr Merriman as to what a reformed EU would look like if Britain votes to remain and what the process of withdrawal would be if Britain votes to leave.
Following the debate in Peasmarsh, Huw said “Our first debate in Peasmarsh brought out the best in public debate. I was struck by the numbers in the audience who were still to make their mind up. It was interesting to hear the speakers, and the audience, pitching for their votes. I hope that these debates will give my constituents the chance to hear both sides of the argument and that the event will help them with their decision-making. I will remain neutral until the debates are over. My aim is to help people come to a conclusion with their vote, not tell people how to vote.”
