Battle MP, Greg Barker, met with Battle Town Mayor, Cllr Ron Harris and clerk Peter Mills to learn more about local issues and future plans affecting Battle.
Cllr Harris explained that the Council are keen to embrace the Coaltion Government’s plans to pass more powers to local communities contained in the Localism Act and would like to take on more responsibility for managing local services. They are particularly keen to explore the possibility of taking over the management of Battle’s car parks and are in discussion with Rother District Council.
Looking ahead, Battle is anticipating a busy and exciting year of activities. The “Battle Big Event” will run from 2 June to 8 September and there will be several events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee including famous annual Scarecrow event.
Speaking in Battle, Greg said “2012 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for Battle in which the town will play it part in supporting the big national events of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games.
The enthusiasm in Battle to take greater responsibility for running the town is to be greatly welcomed and encouraged and the Coalition Government’s flagship Localism Act will provide a route map to make that a reality. I look forward to working closely with the town council to make Battle even better.”
