06.03.12 For immediate release: Greg Barker, MP for Bexhill and Battle constituency met Brady Ells, designer of the officially recognised Sussex flag in Heathfield last Friday.
Brady, who lives and works in Heathfield explained to Greg that his interest in flags from the age of eight sparked his ambition to create an official flag for Sussex. He finally reached his ambition when his design was registered by the Flag Institute last May and was flown for the first time from the flag pole of the Department for Communities and Local Government on Sussex Day which is 16 June.
Brady recently received funding from the Association of British Counties to donate a flag to all parish councils in Sussex. He has sold or donated 471 flags since last June.
Brady is a recent graduate of the Heathfield Works! programme which helps young people not in employment or training to find valuable work experience and equip them with skills for the workplace. As a direct result of the programme he now has a job at Sainsburys in Heathfield following his work experience there.
Speaking in Heathfield, Greg said “I am very impressed with the wonderful enthusiasm and dedication to Sussex that Brady has demonstrated by designing and promoting this wonderful flag. He has clearly spent a lot of time researching the ancient county of Sussex to create a meaningful and bold flag for Sussex which reflects it ancient and modern history. I certainly learnt one or two new interesting facts about Sussex despite the fact I was born here!”
