GREG WELCOMES NEW HOPE FOR A21 UPGRADE
14.5.12 For immediate release: Bexhill and Battle MP, Greg Barker, has welcomed the Coalition Government’s plans to develop proposals to dual the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury.
Conservative Roads Minister, Mike Penning, wrote to Greg to say “Government’s 2010 spending review and the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Statement in November 2011 both made clear the important role that investment in transport infrastructure has to play in stimulating economic growth, and that a functioning transport system is essential to the proper operation of the UK economy.
The Department for Transport has set out details of its investment in major road improvements in this spending review period, and has been clear about the need to maintain a pipeline of future investment in the strategic road network, in support of the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan.”
Speaking in the Constituency Greg Barker said, “The A21 is a vital road for people in our area, our main link to the M25, London, the airports and beyond and all too often it is plagued by traffic jams and slow moving vehicles.
Upgrading the road at Pembury is a vital step in delivering the 21st Century transport infrastructure our areas deserves.
Furthermore, dualling the road should actually make this dangerous route safer as hopefully fewer dangerous drivers will feel the need to speed or overtake inappropriately.
This latest news is not the end of the process but it is a major step forward for the A21.”
